R F B P I: Arrival on Blue Planet

To:  Comrades of Logisaur

There are many unforeseen conditions encountered upon arrival on Blue Planet.  Initial report has been much delayed due to two particular unforeseen conditions:  one normal, one anomalous.

The first is that the “presiding” species of Blue Planet (humans, people) are very primitive in their communication methods.  Almost all have no ability, or a very underdeveloped ability, to communicate telepathically.   Instead they make audible sounds by expelling air through their respiratory systems to form what are called “words”.  The same words are also used in a visual medium, depending on context.  To exacerbate problem even more, there is not a single standard for this system here on Blue Planet.  There are hundreds of different systems of this communication method in different regions of the planet, all with different words and different systems for forming them into audible or visual thoughts.

This of course greatly impeded ability to understand and research the people of the Blue Planet.  Their ability to transmit thoughts telepathically is virtually non-existent; unilateral telepathic thought reading was severely limited due to our different modes of thought as well as cross-currents of “emotion”.  It seems that even among them there is a constant struggle and tension between an individual being’s attempts at ordered thought and the “emotions.”  Regret that at this point cannot offer much insight into the emotions of the humans; can only ascertain that although both the thoughts and emotions do include a recognition and priority for the greater good of the community, very similar to our own way, the emotions very often propel many beings to act in a different way entirely.  This phenomenon has been flagged for further exploration when time warrants.

The impossibility of even unilateral telepathic communication led to the necessity to understand their “language” (word system).  This is the main reason for the delay in report.  Decided to concentrate on one language and was able to determine that although there are many languages almost half the planet uses approximately 10.  One language is most common for inter-regional communication and therefore focused efforts on this language.  Coincidentally this is the main language of the large “northern” land mass where mission landed and is currently based.  Anticipated that choosing a language to focus upon would be the main part of task, that it would then be a simple matter of running the language through our communication acquisition systems in order to translate and eventually understand the language.  This proved overly optimistic.  Initial results were very poor even for translation purposes.  Our CAS (this is an “acronym”, often used, presumably, for economy of words given that the spoken or “written” word often takes an inordinate amount of time and is bulky tool for thought transmission) proved to be insufficient for the task.  It was necessary to allow our CAS to scan the vast data and history of the English, and thereby learn, evolve, and adapt itself to this primitive system.  This consumed much time and thus delayed research and report.  This adaptation is not yet perfect and continues to evolve, but it is now sufficient for an acceptable level of language English comprehension.  The CAS generated word for home planet is “Logisaur”.

As previously transmitted by standard methods have decided to file reports in this native word system, language English, as this will allow greater insight into life, customs, and the internal working of all humans, regardless of language used.  This primitive communication system has enormous impact and limitations on way of life, thought processes, and development of both single units and the larger human community.   The adaptation acquired by Blue Planet based CAS is included with report.

The primitive communication systems are far from completely effective even among Blue Planet inhabitants.  That may be partially what highly regarded human “writer” was focused on when that human said, “The biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has occurred.”  These primitive systems have an enormous impact on all things here.  It appears that many problems and negative consequences, either on a unit to unit basis, as well as on a community to community, or region to region basis, are attributable to lack of effective communication.

The second, anomalous and unforeseen, condition encountered here on the Blue Planet is a planet-wide threat to life.  This will be the focus of next report.  This threat has had such an enormous impact on normal operations that a full and accurate report on normal operations may be impossible for the immediate future.
